10-Day Ireland Family Itinerary: The Ultimate Road Trip (Dublin, Kerry & Galway)
Ten days is the "Goldilocks" length for an Irish family vacation. It is long enough to see the three "Big Giants"—Dublin, Kerry, and Galway—but short enough to avoid travel burnout.
However, the internet is full of "10-Day Ireland" guides that are physically impossible for parents. They suggest driving 4 hours every single day, changing hotels 8 times, and seeing the Giant’s Causeway and the Ring of Kerry in the same week. (Spoiler: That is a 7-hour drive apart).
This is the Ultimate Family Road Trip. It uses a "3-3-3 Strategy": Three nights in Dublin, Three nights in Killarney, and Three nights in Galway. This pacing allows your children to unpack, sleep, and actually enjoy the country.
(Before you pack, make sure to review our Essential Family Packing List for Ireland. To compare this route with shorter or longer options, check out our master Ireland Family Travel Itinerary).
Days 1-3: Dublin (The History Hub)
Base: Dublin City Center (South of the River).
Day 1: Landing & Fresh Air

- The Mission: Stay awake until 8:00 PM.
- The Plan: Drop your bags and head straight to St. Stephen’s Green. It has a fantastic playground, a sensory garden, and plenty of ducks to feed. It’s enclosed, safe, and right in the city center.
- Afternoon: If energy allows, do the Little Museum of Dublin. It’s small, funny, and manageable for kids (unlike the massive National Museums).
- Dinner: Early dinner at a pub near Grafton Street. Remember the 9 PM Curfew for kids in pubs (we explain this rule in Eating Out in Ireland with Kids).
Day 2: The "Viking" City
- Morning: Take the Viking Splash Tour. It’s the perfect introduction to the city for kids—loud, fun, and educational without being boring.
- Afternoon: Visit Dublinia to learn about Viking history, or if the weather is nice, take the DART train south to Dun Laoghaire to walk the pier and get ice cream at Teddy's.
- The Guide Hack: Dublin is dense. Hiring a Family-Friendly Walking Guide for 3 hours can save you from getting lost and ensures you see the hidden history (like the bullet holes on O’Connell Street) that guidebooks miss.
Day 3: Zoo or Gaol?
- Option A (Fun): Spend the day at Dublin Zoo in Phoenix Park.
- Option B (History): Visit Kilmainham Gaol. Note: This is excellent but can be heavy for very young children. It is better for teens.
Days 4-6: The Kingdom of Kerry (Killarney Hub)
Transfer Day (Day 4): Travel from Dublin to Killarney (3.5 hours).
- Stop: The Rock of Cashel in Tipperary. It looks like a wizard's castle perched on a hill. It’s the perfect halfway point to stretch legs and take epic photos.
Base: Killarney (near the National Park).
Day 5: The Ring of Kerry (The Right Way)
Most people drive the Ring of Kerry. We suggest you experience it.
- The Mistake: Trying to drive the whole 179km loop with kids in the back seat. It’s a long day of curves and motion sickness.
- The Better Plan: Hire a Private Driver/Guide. They know the shortcuts, the secret beaches (like Derrynane), and the sheepdog demos that aren't on the map. Plus, you can look at the view, not the road.
- Must-Do: Stop at Kells Bay Gardens for the "SkyWalk" rope bridge—kids love it.
Day 6: The Gap of Dunloe
This is the most magical day of the trip.
- The Adventure: Take a traditional Jaunting Car (horse and cart) through the Gap of Dunloe. It’s a 7-mile pass through savage black mountains.
- The Twist: Take a boat from Lord Brandon’s Cottage back across the Lakes of Killarney to Ross Castle. It’s a full-day adventure that feels like Middle Earth.
(For more details on navigating this region, see our guide to Southern Ireland Family Road Trips).
Days 7-9: The Wild West (Galway Hub)

Transfer Day (Day 7): Travel from Killarney to Galway via Clare (3 hours).
- Stop: Bunratty Castle & Folk Park. This is non-negotiable. It’s the best interactive history site in Ireland.
- Stop: Cliffs of Moher. Yes, it’s crowded. Go late in the afternoon (after 4 PM) when the tour buses have left.
Base: Salthill (Galway).
Day 8: Connemara & The Bog

- Morning: Drive into Connemara. Visit Kylemore Abbey (the Victorian Walled Garden is great for running).
- The Activity: Do a "Hawk Walk" at Ashford Castle (nearby) or hire a nature guide to take you onto the bog to find frogs and insect-eating plants.
- Lunch: Clifden town offers great seafood chowder.
Day 9: City Vibes & Beach Time
- Morning: Galway City is small and walkable. Watch the buskers on Shop Street.
- Afternoon: Spend your final hours at Silver Strand Beach or walking the Salthill Promenade. Let the kids play in the sand while you watch the Atlantic sunset.
- Dinner: A final celebratory meal at The Dough Bros (famous pizza) or Hooked (fish and chips).
Day 10: Departure
- Fly out of Shannon (SNN): You are only 1 hour from Shannon Airport. This is the stress-free option.
- Fly out of Dublin (DUB): You have a 2.5-hour motorway drive back to Dublin. Leave early!
Why You Need a Guide for This Route
This itinerary covers 300+ miles of driving.
- The Transfer Driver: The drive from Dublin to Killarney is long. A driver lets you sleep, play games with the kids, or stop at Adare (the prettiest village in Ireland) without worrying about parking.
- The Ring of Kerry Guide: Driving the "Ring" yourself often means staring at the bumper of a tour bus for 6 hours. A local guide knows the "Skellig Ring" detour—a road too small for buses but perfect for families.
- The Peace of Mind: Knowing there is a car seat installed and waiting for you at every stage eliminates 90% of the travel stress.
